No matter the temperature, she started hunting as soon as the late afternoon set in. I had never seen an owl so active, so voracious. She swept the terrain with her piercing gaze, dove onto her prey with surgical precision, and swallowed everything—one vole after another, without ever storing food. Her appetite seemed endless. I was lucky to observe her for several days, and she proved to me that, despite her silent presence, the great grey owl is one of the most formidable hunters in our northern forests.
