@seanthesheepman: #stitch with @momoandtea should we breed work out of working dogs #foryou #foru #fyp #dogsoftiktok #dog #bordercollie #LearnOnTikTok #EduTok
I rescued a red heeler from an apartment and brought him to my dairy farm. The first couple days, he cowered around the cows but it was amazing how quickly his instincts came out.

I agree with you and would also add that even not being truly suitable for working the pet trade animals are still a bit much for most people because they lack ability to channel instinct/energy

I have 3 pure border collies from working stock. these guys do what we do - lying on couch all day? Sure. Hiking for 3 hrs? Yup. Trying to get them up at 6am? No way. Frisbee? Always. Best dogs ever.

My collie is a failed sheepdog and he loves being a domestic pet, but he definitely still has a herding drive and loves being active so we still encourage those instincts safely as best we can. It’s sad when i see collies or other working breeds unable to get plenty of stimulation !

My Border Collie came from a farm in Ireland, the Shepherd gave him to me as he had no interest in work. I do agricultural construction, dog is with me 24/7, normally asleep in the digger 😜

If you want something similar to a BC but are well adjusted to an active life without working, try a Sheltie.

We rescued our bc, changed our lives forever. I am much more active now to meet her working needs. I love her so much.

The AKC has ruined so many breeds! They have tried ruining the BC but the community has held fast

As someone who’s on his first BC, but has owned working line GSDs as pets for many years, the BC is definitely something else. Working line GSDs are couch potatoes compared even to a show line BC.

Why was that even a question in regards to to a true border collie. Like really. And you answered her

I've seen people saying jrts need less prey drive so they are more pet suitable, don't get a jrt if you don't want a high prey drive 😂

I agree it is so important to not dilute the breed of any dog, especially working dogs.

I loved hearing your thoughts! I agree with you, diluting the working dog entirely is a big problem and has caused MANY breeds to lose their working ability

As a former Border Collie owner, they are great dogs. He came from a ranch bred litter. Yes he was a true ranch Border Collie, he was a great dog and I knew what he needed. I miss him so much. 💕💕

I’m on my second BC as a pet. My first one was the best dog I ever had but she clearly wasn’t real high drive. My second one is super high drive… 100% a real BC. She’s wonderful also.

I have a pure collie and it is the smartest dog, we saved it from a farm when she was a pup she was locked away from the other collies and was stick thin so I'm guessing she wasn't cut out to be a

If your dog is smarter than you, it’s probably not gonna work out 🤣 One of my fur kids was bred to work and I can’t imagine her functioning as a sheep dog. She does thrive at Nosework though!

Let’s also emphasize WELL BRED. Not every purebred is well bred. A WB of any breed, can & does, hold to bread standard well also able to work.

farmer said our collie didn't have what it takes to be a working dog, but turns out that he was just more academically minded and is now a Chartered accountant.

I've only got half of one. a gsd/collie/ monster. once captured a deer and herded into the corner of a field. pure instinct. and no, it wasn't harmed, and she did come when called. she is hard work

100 percent agree. If your breeding the Bc out of the Bc purely for its looks it’s selfish. Pounds and charity’s full of BCs that didn’t make the cut for farm work. 💔

My dog is only 1/2 Border Collie (+1/4 Aussie) and I think she would have made an amazing herding dog. So often I’ve wished we had some sheep for her. I’ve worked with her in other ways.

I feel like this has happened to the Welsh corgi... never see them working, only in show or pet homes... almost feels like a myth that they used to herd cattle or sheep
