I live in NYC, backed out from a weekend trip where the Amtrak or rental car alone would have been $350+ because there wasn’t room in the main friend’s car. Politely told them I’ll join next time.

I've been in both positions and I either have outright said I couldn't afford it, and tried to make plans for another occasion that I can afford, or I have paid for my friends or absorbed the higher cost with no awkwardness, and we're all happy! 😊

If $300 something for a weekend trip is too much. I think don’t go out for a weekend trip. Do a hotpot at home. Or potluck at home. Still have fun. Going out is expensive
