@itsbreabird: if you want to know more about how sam from the lord of the rings was about to see elrond’s father in the sky, my read-through of The Silmarillon starts on April 6th! #samwisegamgee #lordoftherings #middleearth #thelordoftherings #jrrtolkien #tolkientok
Every bit of Sam’s tale chokes me up. Such a true hero… Down to his soul. And all the more powerful as it is unlooked for and acknowledged by any but King Elessar and Frodo.

And it was light from that star in the phial of Galadriel that was so painful to Shelob, whose progenitor killed the two trees, which created the light in the silmarils. ITS ALL CONNECTED PEOPLE

Good insight - and also didn’t the Frodo’s phial of Galadriel contain the light of Earendil? That would be a good story through line by Tolkien, the phial having just helped defeat Shelob

Oh, another fun little idea, Frodo was carrying the light of Earendil gifted to him by Galadriel. So he was carrying around a bit of Elrond's dad 😊

it always kind of throws me to think Elrond's dad is a literal star

Earendil turns into a star that gives hope. Sam sees a star at a point when he and frodo have no hope and that star fills Sam's heart with hope. That checks out to me.

Is there a specific version/printing of the LOTR that you would suggest reading? I have read it when I was younger and want to read it again.

after I read the Silmarillion and then reread LOTR, I also came to the conclusion that the star Sam saw must have been Earendil. it's part of the reason Sam maintains his hope; it wasn't just any star

I always thought that was explicitly earendil. I guess it’s assumed knowledge?

Within the text itself, no reference to any other, the star is described as beautiful and bright. This alone is literarily how Venus would be described. In other texts Tolkien shows Earendil=Venus.

I just bought a new copy of The Silmarillion, and I'm looking at a new copy of LotR also; I bought the 50th anniversary edition when it came out in '99, and it's just about worn out 😁
