JRPGs have the best basslines. I often get asked who my influences are as a bass player. While there are certainly bass players that have had a profound impact on my playing, such as Gary Willis, Sean Malone, Jeff Berlin, and Jaco (to name a few), some of my absolute favorite music has been from Japanese video game composers, especially in the RPG genre. Sometimes I think that many of these composers write better basslines than most bass players. So, I want to highlight what I think are some of the best basslines within this niche. This was one of the first that ever caught my attention.
JRPGs have the best basslines. I often get asked who my influences are as a bass player. While there are certainly bass players that have had a profound impact on my playing, such as Gary Willis, Sean Malone, Jeff Berlin, and Jaco (to name a few), some of my absolute favorite music has been from Japanese video game composers, especially in the RPG genre. Sometimes I think that many of these composers write better basslines than most bass players. So, I want to highlight what I think are some of the best basslines within this niche. This was one of the first that ever caught my attention. "Tyran Castle" from Chrono Trigger has a cool little bass melody in the middle, something you almost never hear. This melody has stuck with me ever since I first played this game as a kid. I decided to start this clip with the melody since it's my favorite part, but the entire bass line is really fantastically written. This track was written by Nobuo Uematsu, who wrote the music for most of the Final Fantasy games. He was not the chief composer on the soundtrack though; Yasunori Mitsuda wrote most of the pieces for Chrono Trigger. This entire soundtrack was one of the earliest influences on me as a musician overall, and was one of the reasons I wanted to start writing music. . . . . #vgm #bass
