koma :
my first thought is, that you can't modify those grades to look like better grade

It is also notable that we used to have a different grading system with far more numbers, but we decided to cut it down for simplicity.

It is not only designed this way to prevent cheating. It is also to make high grades matter more and vice versa when calculating the average grade. The average is used when applying to college etc.

it is based on normal distribution: 0 to 10, then 2 added to all passing grades to avoid 2 negative grades:
Original: A=10, B=8, C=5, D=2, E=0, Fx=-2, F=-5
Final: A=12, B=10, C=7, D=4, E=2, Fx=0, F=-3

Such a weird non-point from the American panellist. Appreciate the British one for rattling back!

The old system was: 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 6, 05, 03, 00. This was confusing for universities outside Denmark, so they changed it to the current to better compare to the letter grades

I prefer the old (13 step) scale that was used when I was in school 😅

Quill 🇩🇰 :
it's because we used to have letters as grades. then we changed to numbers to be able to calculate grade averages. then we had to change again to be compatible with international grading systems.

I JUST heard this yesterday from a Danish friend. I was so weirded out by it 🤣 We Dutchies use 1-10 which seems way more logical-

This is bizarre. They switched in 2006 to prevent cheating. Last time I was in school the grades were all digital...

LofiZ GameplayZ :
I am from Denmark and there is a mathematical reason. All the grades are measured into an average grade, that is why going from a 4 to 7 in one class is worth more points than going from a 10 to a 12

but it does have a mathematical significant right?
you still need to calculate average of your score

They switched to be better aligned with other countries. 13 in the old system was “highly exceptionel” - too few got that and it converted poorly.

and Denmark is looking for a way to get rid of the grade system cus it dosent benefit anyone and kids feel pressured and get pushed into stress and depression cus of a number

Sune Klemme :
in Greenland it is the same grade scale but we use letters.... A=12= excellent B=10=very good C=7=good D=4=fair E=02=sufficient Fx=00=insufficient F=-03=unacceptable

Kmark\|/ :
That, and also because in Denmark we rely more on average grades and get more grades throughout the year and not just exams… therefor it makes so higher grades have more significance 🤓
