@bilimtuel: Yüzlerce yıl içerisinde toprağın altına gömülen dev Moai heykelleri. Şili’nin 3.700 km açıklarındaki Paskalya Adası’nda bulunan ve sayıları 1000’i aşan bu heykellerin en büyüğü 10 metre boyunda ve yaklaşık 82 ton ağırlığında. Arizona Üniversitesi’nde arkeoloji profesörü olan Terry Hunt, “Bu heykeller bugünün adalılarının tanrılaştırılmış atalarını temsil ediyorlar.” diyor.

Las estatuas de moai fueron construidas por el pueblo Rapa Nui, los habitantes nativos de la Isla de Pascua (Rapa Nui), una isla remota en el sureste del Océano Pacífico. La mayoría de los moai fueron tallados entre los años 1250 y 1500 d.C. Se cree que representan los rostros de ancestros deificados o figuras importantes de la tribu Rapa Nui. Eran colocados sobre plataformas de piedra llamadas "ahu" y miraban hacia el interior de la isla, protegiendo a las aldeas y sus habitantes. La construcción y el transporte de estas gigantescas estatuas, algunas de las cuales alcanzan hasta 10 metros de altura y pesan varias toneladas, representan una notable hazaña de ingeniería y organización para la época. Los Rapa Nui utilizaron herramientas de piedra y posiblemente troncos de árboles para tallar y mover los moai desde la cantera principal en Rano Raraku hacia sus destinos en toda la isla.
