Always makes me laugh when people say autistic people aren’t empathetic. My severely autistic son stopped what he was doing and ran over to cuddle me when I began to cry because my grandad died.

Im sorry but didn’t the myth that Autistic people lack empathy come from *his* research in the 90s? Only for it to be disproved in recent years. See Damien Milton and the Double Empathy Problem.

Yes people have always thought I was cold when I’d actually say that I’m hyper empathetic and get more upset by others pain than my own. However something with the way I show it just not translate well with neurotypical is all I can think. However I still find that odd because I genuinely will do ANYTHING to help even complete strangers at times.

To show empathy: I think of similar situations I have faced and the memory is enough for me to feel that emotion and relate on an emotional level. I then talk about my similar experience and assure them I’m not making it about myself, this is just the way I relate to others etc. etc. people generally appreciate my brutal honesty as I preface what I say with eg. “I apologize if this comes off as rude, I mean this in the best way possible—“ or something that fits the context.
