Today we celebrate the Americans with Disability Act that started July 26, 1990. (it’s Disability Pride Month). Please search what that means to understand what I’m about to say. In the year 1993, my birth givers were told I was either going to die before the age 1 or have a miserable life. The Kansas City, MO school district didn’t want me to go to regular public school in the 90s then again 2010s. I did more than attend regular public schools with accommodations. I’m the first in my immediate 1st gen Mexican American family to graduate from college. In 2020, I completed my BA degree in Sociology with honors by working hard to keep scholarships. College debt free. I moved out on my own apartment at age 20. 2020, I left MO & moved to Georgia. 2024 I got married. 2025 my husband & I TV show came out on TLC “Jay & Pamela”. The first Queer, interracial disabled couple to get married on TV (and have their own show). Yes, this is all wonderful because I didn’t take no for an answer. However, disabled people are still fighting for basic human rights in 2025. My accomplishments shouldn’t be “rare or lucky” for people like me. Please watch the movie “Crip Camp” & “Patrice the Movie” to understand. I’m currently writing a memoir because I have needed to fight harder than I should for basic respect, dignity, love & safety just for being disabled. I hope my story helps understand there is Disabled Joy but unnecessary pain that could have been avoided. But due to ableism, & other horrible variables it has been war since day one. I’m proud of who I am. My disability isn’t the problem. Ableism is the problem. #FYP #History #JayandPamela #Latina #LGBTQ #Disability
