⭐️ 3.5/5 stars - ⚠️minimal spoilers ahead⚠️ So I had such mixed feelings throughout this whole book. There were so many moments that had the potential to be amazing, but they just… fizzled out. 😕 The biggest letdown? The world-building. 🌍 The human world felt like modern-day Earth, while the Faerie world had this medieval, old-world vibe, and for me, they just didn’t belong in the same book. There was no real connection between them, which made the story feel a bit disjointed. There were mentions of imps, hags, nixies, and all kinds of Folk, but barely any descriptions to help me really see them. Like, what actually is a nixie? 🧜‍♀️ How monstrous are the hags meant to be? 🧙‍♂️ So many creatures were just named with no real details, which made the world feel hollow instead of rich and immersive. And then there were the subplots. Locke’s storyline? Wasted potential. Vivi and Heather? Barely explored. Oak’s subplot? Could have been huge, but instead, it was just dropped in and wrapped up way too fast. Every time something exciting started, it felt like it was either forgotten about or resolved way too quickly. Same with Jude and Cardan. I did not get it. It felt like an easy cop-out to argue and then just kiss, but there was zero buildup. No development, no real chemistry, no moments that made me believe in it. It just happened out of nowhere. 😬 That being said, Jude was everything, her fight for survival, struggle with power, and ultimately turning into the one person she didn’t ever want to be. Her internal battles were very well written and I loved following her character grow. The political scheming? 🔥 Easily the best part of the book. If there’s one thing this book did right, it was Jude playing the game. The way she manipulated, strategised, and outsmarted the people around her was *chef’s kiss* 🤌. Watching her go from just surviving in Elfhame to actually pulling the strings was so satisfying, and I loved seeing her make bold moves even when the odds were completely stacked against her. The mind games, the betrayals, the power shifts. It was easily the strongest part of the book and was the main thing that kept me turning the pages. 📖✨ So yeah, it was an easy read, but it’s a 3.5 stars from me. ⭐ Everyone says book two and three get so much better, so I’ll definitely be sticking with the series for now to see where the story goes. 📚👀 Have you read this book?
