It wasn't his fault, as an asian I would choose my parents unless they were jerks but they aren't. In his situation his mother raised him alone and wanted the best future for him, she was old, and he couldn't really leave her because he was the only person she had left. In asian culture it is natural to choose your family over anything or anyone, but that depends on the situation.

He is also in the wrong, he couldn’t defend her in front of his parents. He had to choose whether it was his parents or her and his love. Plus the writing shows that Geum-Yeong and Ae-sun’s life’s are parallels of each other. Everything that happened in Geum-Yeong’s life is the polar opposite in what happened in Ae-sun’s life. First her parents gave her everything for her to achieve her dreams, second she didn’t find her love in her first love, Gwansik protected Ae-sun when his parents were harassing her and chose her love, Geum-Yeong didn’t settle in immediately on having a family in her life and a lot more references towards this. That’s also the reason IU is playing Geum-Yeong as well to show what could have happened if Ae-sun followed her dreams. A lot of this ties in the first half of the show. For the people reasoning that the guy is a Mama’s boy and other reasons just look at Gwansik when they were on the verge of death while he and she was able to provide for each other.
