Here's a quick tip for athletes struggling with the spike approach It's okay to dial the drill back and break down the movements. Sometimes the easiest place to start is the 2 step approach, focusing on the steps, dropping the hips and pairing that with the arm actions. You don't even have to jump to begin, just walking and practicing the steps, engraining the pattern. Then you can add some explosiveness to it, a jump and progress with steps. The steps are going to simply be adding momentum into those last 2 steps. So if you push off your left with the 2 step, the 3 step is going to just be stepping into that push off position with your left leg. So you're taking steps into the last 2 steps, gradually picking up momentum with each step (with some speed, leaning forward etc). Starting with the 2 step is an easy way to engrain the pattern. As you step out, the arms go back keep a slightly leaned forward/uprght torso. We don't have a ton of speed going into the spike approach with the distance we have to approach, and having a slight lean is okay. Then as the last leg whips around, the arms swing down and around in front with it. We're looking for the hands to be in front by the time the last leg contacts. Then progress by adding momentum into it with the extra steps. I go deeper into the actual approach technique in the technique section of our programs. Keep in mind the speeds we have into the jump and the tasks we're trying to accomplish can affect the optimal body position, ground contact times and the way we use our muscles/tissues to optimally jump, and it's a good idea to practice both shorter approach jumps, coming off the net, and regular spike approaches (like coming off the pass). We often get into these situations and being dynamic, jumping at slow and faster speeds, being prepared for explosive jumps in less than optimal situations, timing it with the set etc are some of the keys to being a great hitter.
