Stoic the Vast knew his son had it all timed, but in that moment like times shown before he is a father 1st when his sons life is on the line. He was never gonna be willing to just stand their with even sliver of a chance losing his son. No matter how confident Hiccup was or he was in their bond he would never risk it. Put him in same situation an he'd choose to tank the shot EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. He's a father before anything else an he loved his family. He JUST got them all back together in one place he was never gonna just stand an chance losing that again even at cost of himself.
