Dire wolves are actually equally closely related to jackals and grey wolves, as they split off before either. This misconception comes from reading a phylogenetic tree wrong

I don’t wanna be rude but they did extensive testing and found there was 99.5% similarity to grey wolfs. So yes grey wolfs are the closest dna ancestor.
