As a pediatrician and as a father to a child with autism, I want to respond to the comments made last night. “The crisis of autism, the horrible horrible crisis”. These were the words from our president when discussing the rjse of cases of autism. Yes, the number of autism diagnoses has increased over the years. But that rise is due to better awareness, improved screening, and broader diagnostic criteria. We are identifying children who, in past generations, would have been overlooked or misunderstood. That is progress, not catastrophe. Autism is not a ‘horrible crisis.’ My son and so many other children on the spectrum are not a crisis, they are children with unique strengths, challenges, and incredible potential. And I also want to recognize that for some families, autism brings very real challenges, children who struggle with communication, self-injury, or severe medical needs. These families often feel isolated and overwhelmed. That’s exactly why we need less stigma and more advocacy, so they can access therapies, resources, and community support without judgment. When we frame autism as a ‘crisis,’ even if we mean the numbers, it still trickles down as stigma toward autistic individuals and their families. Words matter. Calling it a crisis could make families feel like their child is a tragedy rather than a whole, valuable person. You can advocate for children, want more research, Looks for environmental causes and still choose to see our children not as a crisis. The real challenge isn’t the rise in diagnoses it’s whether our systems are rising to meet those needs. We need more access to therapies, more inclusive schools, and more support for families. Autism is part of my son’s story, but it does not define his worth. He is joyful, capable, and loved. And every child with autism deserves to be seen in that same light. So instead of framing autism as a crisis, let’s frame it as a call to build a more inclusive, supportive society, where every child is given the chance to thrive. #autism #autismawareness #IAmNotACrisis #asd #advocacy
