Service brakes vs Parking brakes. In the US, it's standard for air parking brakes to be held open by air, but the service brakes to also be actuated by air.

The system isn’t as failsafe but it’s substantially more capable of handling inclement conditions and abuse. Hence why many military and heavy equipment vehicles use this system

That’s how medium duty trucks used to have the parking brake. They were a band around a drum , but same idea as disk . Construction equipment is similar also . It’s a tried and true system

My Safari Sahara with the Magnum Chassis has hydroboost brakes. Disk brakes all around. my frame is powder coated green. Lots of medium duty, heavy duty trucks and busses have the same systems.

A very fast application of the brakes 😂 in a catastrophic failure.

the safety air brakes seem to only be for the rear brakes. my bus has air brakes all around and the front brakes only apply with air I would imagine that would be so the front doesn't lock up and skid

Medium duty trucks used to be really common to have driveline park brake. I have a gmc 7000 with air over hyd brakes, and mechanical driveline park brake.

The good thing about those calipers, they need less servicing them the old calipers with the air lever with worm gear actuator.
