He lived around 2300 BC and is known as the first ruler to unify all of Mesopotamia under one empire — the Akkadian Empire. His origins are humble; legend says he was placed in a basket and sent down the river by his mother, a priestess, much like the story of Moses. He was found and raised by a gardener, eventually rising through the ranks to become a powerful military leader. Sargon conquered Sumerian city-states like Uruk, Ur, and Lagash, bringing them all under one rule for the first time in history. He ruled from his capital, Akkad - a city whose exact location is still unknown. He spread the Akkadian language and built a centralised state, with governors and military commanders loyal to him.
