On July 27, 1985, Uganda’s political landscape shifted dramatically when a military coup led by General Tito Okello Lutwa and Brigadier Bazilio Olara Okello ousted President Milton Obote. At dawn, soldiers took strategic control of Kampala, seizing key locations like the parliament, radio station, and central bank. The coup, initially facing minimal resistance, soon descended into chaos as looting and clashes erupted by nightfall. The plotters announced the end of Obote's "tribalistic rule," dissolved the government, and suspended the constitution, leaving the nation in uncertainty. The BBC's Mike Wooldridge provided riveting firsthand coverage of the dramatic events, reporting on the tense atmosphere in Kampala as soldiers patrolled the streets and civilians grappled with fear and confusion. Wooldridge highlighted the ethnic divisions within the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) that fueled the coup, particularly the rivalry between the Acholi and Langi factions. His reports also captured the closure of Uganda’s borders and Entebbe Airport, as well as the cautious reactions of foreign nationals seeking to leave the country. Within days, General Tito Okello assumed power as president, but the coup only deepened Uganda’s instability, setting the stage for Yoweri Museveni’s National Resistance Army to seize power in January 1986. #ugandanstiktok #obote #UgandaHistory #ughistory
