@bradleyblair83: The medial and lateral pectoral nerves are branches of the brachial plexus that supply the pectoral muscles, playing a role in shoulder and upper chest function. Both nerves pass through the axilla and enter the deep surface of the pectoral region, although they differ in their origin and course. The lateral pectoral nerve arises from the lateral cord of the brachial plexus, typically receiving fibres from the C5 to C7 nerve roots. It travels anteriorly, passing above the first part of the axillary artery. It then pierces the clavipectoral fascia, often accompanied by a small vascular branch, to reach and innervate the deep surface of the pectoralis major muscle. Although named “lateral,” this nerve does not innervate the pectoralis minor directly in most individuals. In some cases, it may send small branches that communicate with the medial pectoral nerve. The medial pectoral nerve originates from the medial cord of the brachial plexus and carries fibres from the C8 and T1 roots. It typically travels through or around the axillary artery, and in contrast to the lateral pectoral nerve, it usually pierces and supplies the pectoralis minor before reaching the deep surface of the pectoralis major. As it traverses the pectoralis minor, it may create a small network of branches that pass through or around the muscle, contributing to its motor innervation and continuing on to the pectoralis major. Both nerves contribute to the motor control of the pectoral region, and their coordinated input allows for movements such as adduction, internal rotation, and flexion of the humerus at the shoulder joint.
