WHO INVENTED SCHOOL? The idea of school has been around for a long time and can't be credited to one person. Many ancient civilizations, like Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and China, had early forms of education. Around 3500 BCE, the Sumerians in Mesopotamia created schools to train scribes. Ancient Egypt had schools for the children of the elite, focusing on reading, writing, and math. In ancient Greece, philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle started early educational systems. Plato founded the Academy, and Aristotle started the Lyceum. In ancient China, Confucius (551-479 BCE) stressed the importance of moral education and learning, influencing Chinese schools. The Roman Empire had schools teaching a broad range of subjects. During the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church set up schools that later became universities. The Renaissance brought a revival of learning and more formal schools. In the 18th century, Prussia introduced compulsory education, which influenced other countries. In the United States, Horace Mann promoted free public schools in the 19th century, leading to the development of a public school system in Massachusetts and influencing education across the country. Overall, the development of schools is a combined effort of many cultures, leading to the education systems we have today.
