This is my German best friend who self taught me herself English and is amazing at it but always goes “sorry if it’s bad” and I’m like “girl it’s better than most native English speakers” 🥰

tbf english is the easiest language i have tried and the only language - besides my mother tongue - i have successfully learned to speak. i mean i learned the basics in school but the rest i taught myself through watching youtube videos and movies, reading fanfiction and playing video games. french however ruined my life.

it's far easier to get exposure from English media and accurately learn how to say stuff compared to other languages. English isn't a language you seek out it, it simply comes to you unlike others.

This is SO accurate. So many foreigners who speak English as well as I do, a native speaker, apologise for their English when their annunciation, pronunciation and vocabulary could put me to shame. 💀 Meanwhile I was so proud I managed to make my way around Switzerland and France knowing just enough French to say things like “Hello, I’m sorry my French isn’t very good. Do you speak English? Pardon me/thank you/please. Excuse me, sorry to bother you but I am lost do you know where X is? How are you? My name is Aviva and I’m from Australia. This is how old I am. This is my phone number. What is your name? How much is this thing? May I please have X?”. I was like hell yes I’m basically fluent. 😅

See I was told this and then moved to Germany and man. The accent is so heavy and some couldn’t understand even the most basic of sentences in English. I swear I can’t see another video or comment abt Germans being good at English. Some of them? Yes. Most of them? Absolutely not

Since German and English are in the same language family, it doesn’t really count as learning a language - you have a headstart of understanding like half of lexicon and some grammar already.
