Algeria edit | The Algerian War was a conflict from 1954 to 1962 in which the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN) fought for and won Algeria's independence from French colonial rule. The war was marked by extreme violence, including guerrilla warfare and torture, and resulted in significant casualties on both sides. It led to the fall of France's Fourth Republic, the rise of Charles de Gaulle, and eventually, the signing of the Évian Accords which led to Algeria's independence in July 1962. Cause: The conflict stemmed from a long history of French colonization that began in 1830 and was fueled by a growing desire for independence among the Algerian population following events like the 1945 Sétif massacre. Major events: The war began on November 1, 1954, with a series of attacks by the FLN. The Battle of Algiers (1956-1957) was a key event where the FLN targeted French forces and civilians, prompting a brutal and violent French counter-insurgency, including the widespread use of torture. In 1958, political turmoil in France led to the collapse of the Fourth Republic and the return of Charles de Gaulle, who eventually recognized the principle of self-determination for Algeria. End of the war: The Évian Accords were signed in March 1962, establishing a ceasefire and a path toward an independence referendum. @prussianeditor | #algeria #france #war #viral #fyp
