I think the book is disgusting. However I think it is up to the community to go “ew no”, and if privet companies want to remove it from publication and shelves that is in their right. The govt should

It’s one thing for the community to go “ew no” and it’s another for it to be anyone in power who can as you said *act*. Censorship does more to hide crime than prevent it.

the hardest part for them to grasp is that there are no real people being harmed by writing/reading stories like that, the only line they seem to have is ‘protect children’ but there is no child!

Obscenity laws also often argue that it has to have “literary merit” to not be considered obscene, but the issue there is *how* do you determine that? Especially since ppl are notoriously prone (1/?)

the censorship of it is obviously wrong. But what concerns me is how the author herself said she'd "never be able to see (her kids) the same way again".

It's really sad to see ppl picking up the leftist label, but fail to understand the depths of introspection and empathy needed to carry it. You can't be liberal/leftist while calling for censorship.

It's so stupid to because Australians are some of the most obscene foul mouthed humans in existence 😅 And you literally can't stop Australians getting stuff if we want it. Want a banned book? Give me 3 minutes and I can have it. 🤣

as an Aussie I do hate our censorship laws. they have even attacked anime and said things that didn't even happen in a series. (not only gaming we happy few was banned for awhile because it 'promoted' drug use. which it didn't the whole point of the game was to not take the medication and go against the government.)

I'm Australian and the only books I've ever seen wrapped in Brown paper like surprise book purchases. Not that I don't believe you on some of this, but also some of this doesn't make sense.

My Gran smuggled a copy of Lady Chatterley’s Lover into Australia under her clothes. She was disappointed by the book, but not by the “moral depraviry” within 😉

i’m not sure if this is related but as an australian i’ve heard a lot of people my age passionately talk about how they don’t think homosexuality should be in books, and specifically that they don’t think people should even know about it until 25 and i think that really says something about the state of the country right now

hi, Aussie here, we regularly have the names of victims in news stories but the perpetrators are censored to protect their identity. I know this only adds to one part of the conversation (are we actually doing all of this to protect victims at all) but I feel it's very telling and 100% adds some support to your message. there are alot of people around me who know what has happened in my lifetime and still side eye me for using proper body parts with kids, talking about unsafe secrets vs surprises when ever I can, etc but they'll refuse to let the kids in their lives ask questions, watch shows with family structures outside of what they consider to be "normal", etc. I never knew about the obscenity laws (I've tried really hard to become more politically involved in the last couple of years but there's always going to be something new to learn about) but it is very evident in people's attitudes that this has been happening for a very long time. im sure other Aussies who have watched the old ABC street interviews can agree that there were some very open minds back then and it's only gotten narrower and narrower.

as an australian, a LOT of actual csa is ignored by the law, it's basically accepted by aussie grooming victims that we will never get justice and that icky books are more important than our safety

Censorship, especially in literature, is always such a slippery slope to me. Yes, paraphilia content is morally wrong, but to a lot of old men, gay and trans content is also morally wrong. And we all

I feel like most Australians, myself included, would agree. Sadly a large portion of our government is very deeply conservative and it leads to/maintains policy like this.
