just finished DMing a five year campaign, the party was level 20. the final fight included an astral dreadnought showing up part way through. the dreadnought was killed before getting an attack.

just finished a 1-20 campaign. had to throw a heavily modified tarrasque at them... it could fly and had a breathe weapon that could do 52d6. it healed 75hp a round... they killed it in 4 rounds

Level 20 is also weirdly balanced because like, at level 20 it's just "ok your barbarian can rage as often as they want" but also "you level 20 wizard can just change reality lol".

Make your monsters deal more damage. Don't buff them with ridiculous health pools, combat will never end. High stakes, fast paced, high intensity bursts of combat.

We have an 8-person table and run into this constantly. Our last game ran from levels 5-12, then the DM ran 3 endgame sessions where we fought the bbegs, leveling to 15, 17, then 20 to face them each
