The economy flourished through unlicensed industries such as food processing, metalwork, and textiles. Children played on rooftops. Over time, concerns about hygiene, safety, and modern development pressured the Hong Kong government to act. In 1987, an agreement was reached between Britain and China to demolish the city. Evictions began, and by 1993, the last residents had left. In 1994, the entire city was razed. What once stood as a monument to unregulated urban life is now Kowloon Walled City Park, a serene, landscaped garden that gives little indication of the chaos and vibrancy that once pulsed there.
