@cbsnews: “Rivers are places where people’s souls heal,” but in the U.S., many of those waterways are in danger. Heather Taylor-Miesle, senior vice president of conservation at non-profit American Rivers explains how when rivers are mismanaged, they can be devastating — worsening drinking water quality, flooding into homes, and threatening the futures of people and wildlife. This year, 10 waterways, including the Mississippi, the rivers of Southern Appalachia and the Rio Grande, have been named among America’s most endangered rivers. And while action is urgent, Taylor-Miesle said, the listing of these waterways is not meant to be grim, but a call to action and spark of hope. “It’s not just about something pretty,” she said. “…we can acknowledge that complexity, have a good conversation, and start to plan for the future because that’s what these communities want. They want a future.” #river #rivers #mississippiriver #appalachia #riogrande #water #pollution #flood #infrastructure #cincinnati #ohio #kentucky #nature #environment #conservation #americanrivers #riverlife

A powerful reminder of how essential it is to protect our rivers. The challenges are real, but there’s still hope if we act now to secure a better future for both nature and communities.
