This is what happens. The family owns a giant clam that lives in black water in a tub in that room. The clam is old and to make the clam produce pearls, they have to “massage” the clam like all night until it births a pearl in the morning. The mom and the daughter (who doesn’t know yet) are both allergic to the black water the clam lives in. For some reason, mom has to sit in the tub to massage the clam with her bare hands in order for the clam to produce pearls. But since she is allergic to the water, she “faints from the pain,” so the uncle brings men in at night that he has lied about being doctors to keep the woman awake by pinching her or whatever. They leave in the morning by means of a secret passage so the clients who come to buy the pearls first thing in the morning don’t see them and don’t know that the mom is weak and they might not be able to produce pearls from the clam for much longer. The clam is like 100 years old and the uncle is obsessed with “preserving the family reputation.” The mom explains all this after the uncle greedily throws the daughter in the black tub after her mom falls ill and she volunteers to take her mom’s place. The mom then convinces the uncle that the clam is too old and that they should just release it into the ocean and just go about their lives and do new things. That’s it.
