I’m Nick Hamman and trust me when I say this is a story of struggle, resilience, and deliciousness that you’re going to want to hear. This is Olwethu’s story. When I was in Bloemfontein recently to host my national breakfast radio show on 5FM, the community reached out in their numbers telling me I had to check out a food business called Meals by Olwethu — and after the experience I had, it’s clear to see why! The first time I visited, her place was unfortunately closed in the afternoon. Instead of giving up, I phoned her and told her if she could make it to my show the next morning, I’d put her on the radio. Without hesitation, she arrived the very next day, carrying multiple meals for my team to try as we listened to her story. Olwethu grew up watching her mother work as a cleaner who, in addition to her job, cooked dumplings and skop every morning and walked 5km to sell them for extra income. That work ethic and food knowledge, passed down from her mother and grandmother, shaped Olwethu’s own journey into the food business. She has faced serious challenges, including recently losing her food truck, but her determination hasn’t wavered. Every weekday she wakes up at 4am to start preparing her food before heading to her spot opposite Builders Mart at the Brandfort taxi rank, where she sells her meals. This is exactly the kind of South African we should be supporting. Her food is world-class, every bite packed with flavour and heritage. She also takes orders on WhatsApp — I’ve left her details in the comments. If you’re ever in Bloemfontein, make sure to try Meals by Olwethu and let her know Hammy sent you. 📍 Location: Near Builders Mart at the train station taxi rank (Tsa Namibia/Brandfort) 📱 Call or text: 065 874 1976 #meat #braai #food #taxirank #kasi @MealsbyOlwethu
