Setting up for Eucharistic Adoration on the eve of Corpus Christi. Corpus Christi is a Feast Day in the Catholic Church that celebrates the mystery of the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. During Mass, when the priest says the prayers of consecration over the bread and wine on the altar, the substance of the bread and wine change to become in a real and true way the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of the Son of God. While what is on the altar still retains the external qualities and appearance of bread and wine, the essence of what they are changes to become Jesus Christ. Jesus refers to this mystery when he says in the Gospel of John, “my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink,” and the earliest records of Christian worship express the firm and clear belief in the real presence of the Lord in this Blessed Sacrament. Because Jesus is truly present in this Sacrament, Catholics seek to be in the Lord’s presence in the Eucharist in order to abide with him in prayer. There is a popular form of prayer called Eucharistic Adoration, or the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. In this form of prayer, the priest places a consecrated host in a golden display case called a Monstrance (from Latin, “monstrare”, meaning “to show”). The monstrance is placed on the altar in Church, and Christians worship the Lord present in the Eucharist. In this video, I am getting the Monstrance out of its case, and putting an unconsecrated host in its glass display (called a Luna) so that it can be consecrated at the next Mass.
