Depending on the message, I will just say "hey" and wait for a response. Too many people have the message show up as part of their notifications and I don't always want others seeing certain things.

My notifications stay on silent and just actively look at the blinking icon when there’s a new message on my toolbar because I simply CANNOT with another notification.
