@drmarkhyman: We’ve long separated mental health from brain health. But they are deeply connected. Brain inflammation. Mitochondrial dysfunction. Oxidative stress. Neurotransmitter imbalances. These aren’t abstract terms—they’re biological disruptions that can profoundly affect mood, behavior, and cognition. And here’s the part we can’t ignore: these imbalances don’t just come out of nowhere. They’re shaped by what we eat. By our gut health. By toxins in our environment. By deficiencies in the nutrients our brains need to function. When we change the inputs, the outcomes change too. In juvenile detention centers, simply replacing processed food with whole, nutrient-rich meals led to a 97% drop in violent incidents, a 75% reduction in restraints, and—most shocking of all—a 100% drop in suicide, which is the third leading cause of death in teenage boys. In prisons, providing inmates with healthy food and a basic multivitamin slashed violent behavior by up to 80%. This is what happens when we stop treating the mind as separate from the body. Mental illness isn’t just a chemical imbalance. It’s often the result of biological imbalances we can measure—and fix. Food is medicine. And mental health starts with the brain.

I 100% believe that our brain works based on the health of our gut and the rest of our body. Obesity is shown to have negative effects on the brain.
