Today dad was getting a little down about not driving and having a car so I redirected that conversation by arm wrestling. Dealing with dementia one thing you learn is not to argue, in their mind they think they can still do what they use too. Don't ever belittle them or show anger. Explain to them what's going on and why. No they are not going to remember what you told them. But most of the time it settles them. Redirect with a funny story. Or show them pictures of something on your phone. Everyday I show him pictures of Kennedi and Quentin he doesn't remember them but he sure does enjoy seeing the pictures and it calms him. And he always smiles. Stay calm don't raise your voice, be patient and show affection. They are so alone because they don't understand what is going on. You have to be the light in their darkness. It is the hardest thing I have dealt with but we deal with the cards we are dealt with and make the best hand we can. Knowing he is taken care of and safe.
