@equinamitous: Today was planned as a grooming session and became an inadvertent patience tying lesson for my coming 2 y/o filly, Phantasia. This shows her progression over 20 minutes and my thoughts about it. What do you think about patience tying as a training tool? Go or whoa? #horsetraining #horse #horseowner

There are ways to teach patience and emotional regulation without using learned helplessness. Please explore the science behind operant conditioning and you’ll find several humane methods to replace this outdated method.

I have an autistic child. Sometimes she struggles to manage her emotions and all I can do is walk away and let her be alone in her room to work it out. She usually comes out much calmer and with a totally different attitude. It’s a similar method in my mind.

Done correctly is OK, but unfortunately, more people seem to do it incorrectly and caused more harm than help

Im all for it as long as they’re not freaking out to the point of hurting theirselves. I will step in if they’re full on panic and it’s to the point where the risk outweighs the benefits.

Being able to stand still and calm is as much as a lifesaver ask learning how to use their body. It's like using hobbles, it's always so bad until the legs are wrapped up and they can't stand still.

My opinion it is that most creatures and people benefit from learning how to respond to not getting their way. Her actions show she needed the lesson, and I think you did well in this situation

Patients poles are one of the best things you can do for your horse in my opinion, do people use them wrongly? Absolutely but there’s always gonna be someone using something the wrong way.

We have the tree of patience. It’s the huge oak tree with no low limbs that the horse can touch. right in the front yard. I can do my house stuff and keep an eye out.

imo I think the biggest issue is folk tying up extremely green horses and letting them thrash about to teach them how to stand politely. there's a difference between tying an impatient horse and tying an untrained horse.

I don't own horses but I do own goats and I do tie them up if I need them to stand still so I can do their hooves or if I need to trim their hair. I don't leave them but I do move so they can't see me but I can see them.

Ranch horses have to sit tied for a lot of reasons. Period. If they aren’t trained for that they’re useless.
