If im being honest I can say that I haven’t always had the best relationship with my natural hair. And it’s still a work in progress! It used to stay straightened when I was younger and I was conditioned to think that for special occasions it needed to be in a pressed state. It got to a point for me in 7th grade where I was tired of the damage and I stopped getting my hair straightened. I cut the straight pieces off and refused to apply any heat to my hair for about 2 years. BUT, through high school and college I got into the habit of wearing braids a lot, not fully understanding the damage they can cause as well due to the tension. On top of that! (Yes there’s more) I dyed my hair my junior year of college without ensuring I was moisturizing and caring for my colored hair. During my last semester of senior year last year I noticed just how bad the thinning and breakage around my edges and hairline had gotten after taking braids out. I promised myself I’d work on truly catering to my hair’s needs and wearing it more in its natural state. Although I did decide to get braids over the summer I made sure to let my braider know about my concerns/goals and to ensure that I don’t get “protective styles” back to back. Because they can really be not so protective if worn excessively or if they are too tight. In November of 2024 I started to implement 6-8 week trims into my regimen which has helped out a LOT with the manageability and health of my curls. The trim I got was really a cut because my ends were so split and dry. My long time Bestfriend/sister @mya💛 has definitely inspired me to take the time to work with my hair rather than against it. I never used to wear wash and go’s or twist outs (I’m still working on getting my mini twist right🧍🏾‍♀️) and honestly have felt pretty self conscious about it in the past BUT I’m finally at a point where I feel like I actually love my curls and the days of me resorting to a low bun for every style are over.
