You know when your kids ask to help, and every part of you wants to say, ‘not now’, because you’re tired, there’s no time, and you just can’t face the mess or the chaos? I said yes instead and ended up not only making flatbread, but discovering a few things that completely shifted how I see moments like this. Here’s what all three of us learned. 1. I realised I needed to be realistic because managing my expectations made room for patience and presence. 2.I realised I needed to be present, because choosing now over later turned hesitation into connection. 3. I realised I needed to be trusting, because when I trusted them, it permitted them to trust themselves. For the children, this experience was far more than simply making bread. It represented growth across every domain of their development. Physically, they refined fine-motor coordination, strength, and sensory integration through manipulating the dough. Cognitively, they exercised attention, memory, sequencing, inhibition and cause and effect. Socially, they practised cooperation, non-verbal communication while sharing a common goal. Emotionally, they experienced joy, patience and curiosity. What made all of this possible was the sense of safety and containment. To be calmly guided through exploration. To interact meaningfully, not be afraid to make mistakes and to be intrinsically driven to learn. Anytime I feel like I’m controlling the situation, it’s because I’ve either not set realistic expectations, or failed to communicate them clearly. But anytime I’ve created space for expression, held firm where behaviour needed direction, and guided the moment with calm leadership, everything has stayed contained, safe and connected.
