Early Roman calendars had only 10 months, starting in March, and were based on lunar cycles. Julius Caesar and his astronomers modified the Roman calendar to include January and February, bringing the total to 12 months. The Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582, refined the Julian calendar (introduced by Caesar) to account for the slight difference between the solar and lunar year, implementing a leap year every four years. While some proposed 13-month calendars, like the International Fixed Calendar, were considered, the 12-month system was ultimately adopted and has become the dominant calendar worldwide.
