Creating an atmosphere that feels like the Fantasyland dark rides in Disneyland. It was all made by a Disney Imagineer by the name of Rolly Crump. Who was responsible for working on Disney attractions like Its A Small World, Haunted Mansion, and Enchanted Tiki Room among others. The original ride was truly something special for Knott's Berry Farm. That current one that exists is such a glitch filled mess.
