If food dye does not provide any nutritional benefit nor improve shelve stability, and all it does is improve aesthetics, then why even risk it even if evidence is limited? There is still correlational evidence, which of course is not causation, but is still meaningful.

in the 40's and 50's thalidomide was thought safe. In the 70's oils, butter and more than 1 egg a day was thought unsafe, and over the following decade or two many more things were identified. Now with improved science and research, some of these proven harmful foodstuffs have now been proven otherwise. In another 20 or 30 years the harmful landscape will change again. Let's not jump the gun without proven facts.
