The French fought by our side in Iraq I think it was. A French soldier has a terrifying story. He said that when they met the Marines, compared to his own squad they were giants. Whenever a French Lieutenant dies the standing orders are for the rest to safely retreat. But when a Marine Lieutenant dies, it is as if the Lieutenant only existed to keep the Marines on a leash, and the Marines fought even harder and more ferociously.

I believe the following poem was written on the side of a knocked out AMTRAK landing vehicle after the landing, by the Marines at Tarawa, it reads,” When a Marine dies and goes to Heaven, to St Peter he will say, one more Marine reporting Sir, I’ve served my time in Hell.”
