The French fought by our side in Iraq I think it was. A French soldier has a terrifying story. He said that when they met the Marines, compared to his own squad they were giants. Whenever a French Lieutenant dies the standing orders are for the rest to safely retreat. But when a Marine Lieutenant dies, it is as if the Lieutenant only existed to keep the Marines on a leash, and the Marines fought even harder and more ferociously.

They took Tarawa, yes, but at an incredible cost. US strategists had not fully fleshed out island warfare doctrine, so a lot of unnecessary mistakes were made that ended up killing a lot of Marines. US command learned and evolved, though.
