okinawan here. there's so little about our culture online. whenever okinawa is brought up it's either in refrence to vacation ideas or WW2 history. there is so much more

Yep the Japanese invaded and annexed Okinawa and forced them to assimilate into Japanese society and banned the Okinawa people from speaking Okinawa language and customs just like the Aniu people for a western comparison what Japan did to Ainu is like what the us did to native Americans and Okinawa is like when America annexed Hawaii though military force and made it the 50th sate

Tons of Okinawans here in Hawaii. Been to Okinawa twice and tried to learn as much of the language as I could! I always call them Okinawan and not Japanese! Respect!!

indigenous cultures are always so interesting. I think part of it is the thought of what knowledge/wisdom has been overlooked, forgotten, or even erased due to colonization.

My mother and sister have both gotten Hajichi to honor our ancestors. My mom went to visit our family in Okinawa and the culture is soooo unique. I want to go and study there eventually.
