@pbsnews: As the Trump administration continues its immigration crackdown, Rep. María Salazar, R-Fla., is one of a few members of Congress now seeking to address the issue through legislation. She has introduced a House bill, called the Dignity Act, that is aimed at addressing immigration reform. “What are we going to do with those people who have been here for more than five years, have American kids, are paying taxes, have been contributing to the economy, people that are not criminals? It's true that they are illegals. Of course they are illegals, but someone gave them a job,” she said, adding “It's true they're illegal, but they have been helping the economy for 20 years. So let's be realistic, guys,” she told Geoff Bennett. “Let's do something with them. Let's give them dignity.” Salazar, who represents Miami-Dade County, said that if the United States wants to “continue growing as the number one economy in the world” and be “the beacon of hope and the bastion of human rights and civil rights,” then the nation needs to focus on the immigrants who are here now. She also said she has been in touch with the Trump administration and the Department of Homeland Security about immigration policy. “I am saying, be careful, because we do need to follow the law and give due process,” Salazar said. “They have been very receptive when I have gone to them with specific cases where the due process has not been followed.” Tap the link in our bio for more from the interview. #immigration #News #politics #Trump

I think it's pretty clear that republicans don't want to continue to be a bastion of rights and a beacon of hope. Has she been paying attention to her own party?

Can’t listen anymore to constant lies and gaslighting while the media rolls over and allows America to believe it without any correction of facts and evidence.

No, birthright citizenship is not just for the descendants of Black slaves—it applies to everyone born in the U.S. under the 14th Amendment. It was originally passed to protect freed slaves, but the Supreme Court later ruled (in Wong Kim Ark, 1898) that it includes children born to immigrant parents, even undocumented ones. Denying birthright citizenship—especially when targeting Mexican or Latino communities—is unconstitutional and rooted in racism and xenophobia. It ignores laws that guarantee equal protection and tries to turn fear into policy.

It’s disappointing and unacceptable to hear comments like “go back to where you came from.” This country was built by immigrants and continues to thrive because of the diversity and contributions of people from all walks of life. Unless you are Indigenous, your ancestors were also immigrants — so using that kind of language shows a lack of understanding about American history and values. No one group has more claim to this land than another based on race, accent, or origin.
Attacking people based on where they come from or assuming someone is “illegal” because they look different is not only ignorant, it's deeply rooted in racism and xenophobia. Immigration status, like nationality, doesn’t define a person’s worth or right to be treated with respect. Many immigrants, documented or not, are workers, taxpayers, caregivers, and contributors to society. Your fear or discomfort with their presence is not a justification for hatred or exclusion.
If you truly care about the future of this country, then I encourage you to focus on facts, not fear. Diversity is not a threat — it’s America’s greatest strength. We’re not going anywhere, and no amount of prejudice or hostility will erase our dignity or our right to be here. You may not like it, but equality and justice are not optional in a democracy.
