Anyone else get snow?? And, say hi to the newest addition to our family: a COLD PLUNGE barrel tub. Shall we give it a name?! Story Time:I used to think that I wanted a “comfortable” life. Until, I reached my mid-twenties and realized that comfort and a life perfectly charted out seemed more like dying than living. My brain craved adventure and challenge. I quit my job, decided to move out of state to pursue entrepreneurship; a life more challenged and unknown. On this trip, I met Ryan. He, too, was also in pursuit of his life adventure; unafraid of challenge. And so it goes - four babies later, here we are. As I’ve mentioned before, one thing I admire about Ryan that has thankfully rubbed off onto me is his discipline. It gets me thinking about how one becomes disciplined. It’s by doing things you don’t want to do - and doing them repeatedly. Getting outside your comfort zone, regularly. Pushing yourself to places that most people don’t want to go. As I think about the one person I’d want by my side to build a family with and join me in the journey of life... (of course, it’s Ryan) and it’s because he is a person who can do hard things. And when you have kids, there are a lot of things that your mind (and body!) may not want to do. As such, the better equipped you are at doing hard things, I believe the more in harmony the family unit will be. Turns out, the inner region of the brain called the anterior midcingulate cortex grows when we do the things that we don’t want to do. And, there is evidence that people with larger regions of this part of the brain live longer. Dr. Andrew Huberman says that, “Scientists are now starting to see this part of the brain not just as one of the seats of willpower, but perhaps actually as the seat as the will to live.” So. If I could tell myself something about picking the “right” partner or give any advice to those younger in the crowd doing so, it would be this: choose the person who is not afraid of doing hard things. Choose the one who welcomes them.
