and Catholicism is a 💯 an immigrant religion. our practice is heavily informed by the cultures we came from. Irish, Mexican, Polish, Italian - we all have our own separate traditions, feast days, etc

I always equated being Catholic with being in Fight Club. We don’t talk about it. I heard a lot of homilies focusing on fasting but dressing nice and not acting like you’re fasting and keeping your prayers to yourself and not praying in public. I’ve internalized that in my everyday life. If you catch me suffering for something I’m on death’s door and it’s 911 time. It’s just what we were taught. Keep it quiet.

Baptized at 13 days old. Irish and Polish Catholic grandparents. Community was BIG in their cultures and the church. I look at it like the difference between kindness and niceness.

And maybe its just MY experience within it, but I also I feel like when it came to the bible etc it really was more about like this is a book of general lessons/ideas to embrace etc , not like RULES

So this works for converts who come from evangelical backgrounds, but there are all types of Catholic converts, who don’t have this specific upbringing, and who don’t fall within traditionalist.
