@tcburkej: The difference between Catholic converts and cradle Catholics are cradle Catholics are taught to live their faith and not really talk about it but Catholic converts come from a place where they were taught to talk about their faith but not actually live it
You just explained to me why as an exCatholic, I can tolerate Catholic bullshit more than evangelical bullshit.

Catholics show their faith by acts of service and through community, but Evangelicals are all about the “ personal relationship with Jesus Christ.” The difference is village vs self.

Literally so accurate. I cannot stand small groups, bible studies or preaching 😂 and non catholic “services” feel too casual

and Catholicism is a 💯 an immigrant religion. our practice is heavily informed by the cultures we came from. Irish, Mexican, Polish, Italian - we all have our own separate traditions, feast days, etc

Like my priest once told me "As you get older you will either become a practicing catholic or non-practicing catholic. But you will always be catholic and you will be welcomed back with arms."

In Catholic school, our teachers taught the motto, “preach the gospel at all times, use words if necessary.”

Pretty much some of my question I am a convert I just converted over on Easter. And is there a way that that can be taught to me because I don’t wanna feel like I’m doing something wrong .

“They’re just cultural Catholics” is a phrase I’ve seen converts repeating. Ummm yes that’s the point.

My FIL once asked why I didn't go to church anymore and I told him I didn't like the idea of my faith being proformative. Do I still have many deep held beliefs that align with the church? Yes but

That’s why folks like JD Vance are surprised every time they get lectured about how being catholic means they have to care about others

As a catholic we use to sing “ they’ll know we are Christian’s by our love” meaning not by our words, but actions

catholic converts seem to have a huge issue with jesuits too, where many cradle Catholics (like me) have spent a decent part of our lives being educated by Jesuits

I’m not catholic anymore, but I was taught by nuns who drilled social justice into my head. I care about the less fortunate

Cant evangelicals just stay in the mall and be hypocrites there. Worship prosperity gospel in their storefront churches.

This!! Catholics do not proselytize. It’s a completely different orientation to the faith and the world around them

I always equated being Catholic with being in Fight Club. We don’t talk about it. I heard a lot of homilies focusing on fasting but dressing nice and not acting like you’re fasting and keeping your prayers to yourself and not praying in public. I’ve internalized that in my everyday life. If you catch me suffering for something I’m on death’s door and it’s 911 time. It’s just what we were taught. Keep it quiet.

Baptized at 13 days old. Irish and Polish Catholic grandparents. Community was BIG in their cultures and the church. I look at it like the difference between kindness and niceness.

And maybe its just MY experience within it, but I also I feel like when it came to the bible etc it really was more about like this is a book of general lessons/ideas to embrace etc , not like RULES

And we are culturally Catholic. That’s a thing that a lot of people don’t understand. Cradle Catholic here even taught at a Catholic school… It’s different.

So this works for converts who come from evangelical backgrounds, but there are all types of Catholic converts, who don’t have this specific upbringing, and who don’t fall within traditionalist.
