The comments are killing me 😭 ya’ll are assuming SO MUCH of imaging that it just DOES NOT do.

Don’t blame me :
Radiologist here. You can’t treat based only on imaging. You always have to correlate with clinical history, physical exam findings, biopsy, etc because many things can cause the same findings

Sorry to sound like a humanities major (I am), but it seems like some people are just discounting the difference between the brain and the mind.

Yep. It also gives potential for benign incidental findings. I had an MRI and CT and they found an unrelated brain aneurysm that caused years of unnecessary anxiety bc it's benign

there’s so much we don’t know about the brain and mental illness. personally I hope one day there’s a blood test or something for SSRI comptability.

the end of this points to something very important I think: mental illness ≠ brain illness. your mental state is not your literal brain. we connect them so much because we think of the brain as

But if they do have ventriculomegaly, shouldn’t you be doing a work up of that ddx? What if there’s a potential cause of the schizophrenia and the vm that we’re missing by not imaging?

An image is not some look into the 4th dimension. It’s … just a physical diagram. Our minds are experienced and influenced by the environment. It’s more complex than just a flow chart of images

I was told biploar disorder would be visible at the extremes, but not when more around baseline. I forget who told me that, but it took away my desire curiosity when I get spam from the Amen Clinic.

a big thing I keep at the front of my mind is how we treat PATIENTS, not bloodwork, or MRIs, or monitoring equipment. all those things are tools, but they aren't the patient

a scan helps detect symptoms, like lots of other diagnostic tools, and the collection of symptoms/characteristics is the diagnosis?

People you want surveys, a lot of therapists and prescribers don’t use them which makes it very hard to track progress!

Most complex organ in our bodies, and then how each complex brain runs our minds. SO much to it. It probably doesn't help that the public has learned about "health scans" and thinks it's simple.

Why do we even asking patients questions? Just scan the brain and load up the medical history 😂

what im wondering about is: did the ventriculomegaly establish over time and exposure to world, or were they born with it?

I understand the specificity is low but how about the sensitivity? Could this be used to rule out schizophrenia in a pt with overlapping mental illness symptoms?

my first MRI was "most consistent with MS" but then I had to go through ruling out mets, sarcoidosis, CADASIL, etc etc etc like imaging is not always immediately clear anyway 😭

Also on fMRI scans: they are essentially a big old correlation. Does not provide information for the causes of the brain activity we observe. Not many people seem to know/ understand that.
