My take on Bombadil: LOTR and Silmarilion are Written Mythology Epics, Tom is the old folk songs and campfire tales, nursing rhymes. That’s why he is the oldest, he was created before the epics

Actually, because it starts rather whimsically, I think it serves as an accurate depiction of the war's effect on the characters and the atmosphere. The ending leaves everything changed. Frodo asks "where shall I find rest" and Gandalf, for the first time, doesn't have an answer

The barrow wights scared the heck out of me when I was young, but reading it aloud recently they were more laughable. And Tom wasn’t that out of place. Guess a lot depends on the audience.
