I saw this & read the story in junior high. Also to answer your question on why they do the lottery,it was for a good harvest(“Sacrifice in June, corn be heavy soon” - Old Man Warner) at least according to South Park since they did a parody episode on it (“sacrifice in March, corn give plenty starch” - South Park version). Also, I like to think the reason they continue this tradition even though other villages have stopped it, is probably because nobody wants to come to reality that they’ve sacrifice their neighbors and loved ones for a corn harvest
