It wasn’t the last incentive trip I ever took with my former company But it was the one that made me start questioning everything These trips used to be exactly what they were supposed to be Luxury rewards for the women who built the company from the ground up But after a leadership change, everything shifted I’ll never forget hearing someone say “Why are all these women just sitting by the pool? We need to put them to work” And just like that, what should’ve been a celebration turned into a PR performance We were thrown into “charity” projects Painting, building, doing work we weren’t trained to do While the cameras rolled Let’s call it what it was A white savior complex with good lighting and a marketing budget The part that wrecked me most They brought in underprivileged children to spend the day at our five-star resort It was pitched as a kind gesture But all I could think about was how they’d have to leave that world of chandeliers and marble and go back to struggling While we stayed, smiling for the next photo op That’s not impact That’s not empowerment That’s exploitation For both the kids and the women on that trip And what made it worse The company could’ve easily hired local professionals to do the work Trained workers People who needed jobs People who could’ve done it better And in turn, boosted the local economy and created lasting impact But instead, they used us Unpaid, unqualified women To do it for free So they could feel good and look generous I tried my best, but I wasn’t skilled enough for what they asked us to do I know I didn’t do a great job And I still carry that guilt Because real people deserved better than a half-painted wall and a company patting itself on the back That trip lit a fire in me I saw through it And from that moment forward, I could never unsee the truth If your “charity” centers the brand more than the people, it’s not charity If your “reward” requires free labor, it’s not a reward And if your leadership uses women and children for optics It’s not leadership It’s exploitation #WhiteSaviorComplex #DestinationCharityAwareness #StopPerformativeGiving #HireLocalsHelpLocals #ExploitationIsNotImpact #WomenDeserveBetter #WeBuiltIt #TruthOverToxicity
