Most of us will, at some point, have to make a hard choice. It might be a relationship, or a career, or moving house, but a hard choice is when there's no easy or obvious #reason for choosing one path over another. But the #philosopher Ruth #Chang offers us a way out. Chang suggests that most of the reasons we consider when debating a #choice are “practical reasons.” This is when we weigh up the measurable outcomes of option A over option B. Consider, for example, somebody called Adam who's weighing up career choices. Should he choose one which is intellectually exciting or one which is financially secure? So, he calculates how stimulated he'll be in job A, and he calculates how much money he'll get in job B. It's not easy to compare stimulation with money, and in Adam's case, it's clearly a close call. The practical reasons have run out. But Chang argues that we can create a reason by simply choosing one side or another. When we're torn by a hard choice, we have to commit to a version of ourselves that we want to be. In our example, Adam has to choose if he wants to be the kind of #person who uses his mind every day, or who can buy a very nice house. When you commit to a loved one, a cause, or a project, you commit to a future version of you. The practical reasons are equal, but you've created an #existential one. For Chang, when we’re presented with a hard choice, we have to frame it as a question. What will this choice make of me? And is that who I want to be? #philosophy #decisions #relationships #careeradvice
