he is just, but he is also merciful. When we sinned, yes, we deserved to pay the debts ourself, but, God is merciful too, so, in order to act both merciful and just, God took the debt upon himself willingly pay for us. think of it like this, I committed a crime, the judge will sentence me to jail, however I done many good deeds, will the judge let me go because I am still a good person? no, that crime still needs to be paid. So Jesus bail us out of our punishment
