I don’t know about ur family specifically, but from my pov Tongan is rlly aggressive and passionate language so I would always think I am picking up rude things in the tone of how they speak…

Story of my life.. u look more poly than me at least u look mix 🤣🤣 Took me a long time to NOT let it bother me. Just embrace your heritage and know our people hide their colorism behind jokes. Ofaz

Imo it don’t matter who “looks” more Tongan! It’s in your DNA and that’s all that matters! Embrace it!

Nah forreal I was too palangi to be with the Polynesians but too Polynesian to be with the palangis. But it grew my understanding of people in general to where if you can’t accept me step away.

Why did you just explain my life to a T?! We must be related because some of my Tongan side are so rude as hell but my mom always told me it’s because we are beautiful Tongan and they are ugly 😂 so idk but that’s just what I believed.

it's usually the family members are the issue. closed minded and think their toot don't stank 😂. Tongans can be very judgemental, especially towards their own family.

As a half Micronesian half black islander I never had this experience from either side, but perhaps if it was older family members they treated you that way because of bias from oppression? It-

SAME! I always felt not Hawaiian enough because I’m both Hawaiian and white 🥴 and feeling like the out cast made me avoid doing certain cultural things/ words 😭

I felt the same way growing up, being biracial (I don’t like using afakasi) was really hard around my 100% Tongan relatives. You’ll feel outcast until all the poly boys start hitting on you LMAO

Kind of relating in a way - I was always shaded for being skinny 😂😐 apparently being skinny made me “fie palangi” it was weird. But also said it the same shady tone & side eyes causing the feeling of being an OutKast

Half Fijian, born and raised on Oahu. I know what you mean. My brothers both look more Fijian than me and always seemed to be more accepted. You’re beautiful the way you are!

You’re feelings are very valid sis, I have an older sister who is half Tongan and half black. Growing up she was addressed that way too but we were too young to understand and now as we’re adults- we’re always making sure folks/family know she’s just our sister and nothing more. She always had the same issue you went through and I believe it’s mainly because of the mentality of people. Embrace both, and don’t let that affect you from being addressed a certain way. It’s a them problem and not a You problem love you ♥️

I’m Tahitian but only 1/4th. I look white. My grandpa always tell me it’s not about the outside it’s the inside. And the only joke they’ve made is I need some sun. Idk maybe Tahiti’s different.
